Marilyn Monroe makes a posthumous comeback with Chanel No.5

Almost 56 years after Marilyn Monroe famously quoted on her first cover of Life magazine- that she only wore Chanel No.5 to bed, Monroe has been posthumously appointed as the new face of Chanel No. 5. A newly found recording of her discussing the same with Marie Claire’s then-editor in chief Georges Belmont is being used in a new advertising campaign for the fragrance. The voice of Monroe will be accompanied by a photograph of her holding a scent bottle, taken by Ed Feingersh.

51 years after her death, Monroe can be heard saying – “They ask me: ‘What do you wear to bed? A pajama top? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?’ So I said, ‘Chanel No.5,’ because it’s the truth. And yet, I don’t want to say nude. But it’s the truth!”

 Chanel will roll out a print and TV campaign featuring Monroe later this fall. Monroe takes over the No. 5 reins from the fragrance’s former, Brad Pitt, who was paid a reported $7 million for his services for the brand. There is no word if Chanel is paying Monroe’s trust for use of her likeness.

CHANEL No 5 IN A 30 OUNCE BOTTLE

 The most famous women’s fragrance ever made, the Chanel No.5, is now available, joy of joys, in a 30-ounce bottle priced at 3.200 Euro ($4,200).

This is probably enough to last for more than 2 years. Weighing at around two pounds, this limited edition bottle is dubbed the Grand Extrait edition. There’s also another Grand Extrait bottle available for purchase, containing 7.5 ounces of the precious perfume, with a lower price tag, of $2,100. The Grand Extrait bottle contains fragrance of the most “exceptional quality” according to Ruthie Vexler, the spokeswoman of Chanel. The bottle itself is reportedly delivered inside a “hand-assembled, artisan-crafted case”.

Furthermore, as Chanel officials describe, just very few of these bottles will be produced each year, therefore you’ll have to order yours rather quickly. There aren’t many details regarding the liquid though, but additional info will probably be provided during the following weeks.

Among those celebrities intimately tied to the Chanel No.5 there are Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman. In an even more impressive manner, Marilyn Monroe was asked what she wore to bed and she had famously and nicely replied “why, Chanel No.5, of course”. This is how famous and important this thingy is.

Chanel 5

Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume launched by Parisian couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. The French government reports that a bottle of Chanel No. 5 is sold every thirty seconds and generates sales of $100 million a year. It was developed by Russian-French chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux. It is often considered the world's most famous perfume.

At the age of twelve, Chanel was handed over to the care of nuns, and for the next six years spent a stark, disciplined existence in a convent orphanage, Aubazine, founded in the twelfth century. From her earliest days at Aubazine, the number five had potent associations for Chanel. Aubazine had been founded by Cistercians, a Catholic order who placed great emphasis on numerology. The number five was especially esteemed as signifying the pure embodiment of a thing, its spirit, its mystic meaning. The paths, which led Chanel to the cathedral for daily prayer, were laid out in circular patterns repeating the number five.
Her affinity for the number five co-mingled with the abbey gardens, and by extension the lush surrounding hillsides abounding with cistus, a five-petal rose. It is noteworthy that the Cistercians, an ancient branch of Catholicism, derived the name of their order from this very flower.
In 1920, when presented with small glass vials of scent numbered 1-5 and 20-24, for her assessment, she chose the sample composition contained in the fifth vial. Chanel told her master perfumer, Ernest Beaux, whom she had commissioned to develop a fragrance with modern innovations:
"I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already, it will bring good luck."
